Emily's yoga journey began in 2005 under fluorescent lights in a cold gymnasium one autumn morning at 6am, as part of her university soccer coach's effort to get her team stretching more. After 15 years of competitive soccer across Atlantic Canada at provincial, national, and university levels her body had accumulated a long list of complaints. As terrible as that first brush with yoga was (hello air-conditioned gym and fluorescent lights), something felt like home.
With no studios nearby in tiny Sackville, NB she found a few books and rolled out a mat at home, never suspecting yoga would change her life.
From there, that mat became a constant companion. It tucked into her pack while treeplanting across Western Canada, and again while backpacking through Europe. She found a studio in the Rocky Mountains when she lived in Banff, but felt intimidated by the teachers who'd all traveled to India to train. In the days of lonely planet guides with limited information available, she really didn’t even know where to begin! In 2009, she walked into a Moksha Yoga studio in Halifax — and before the class was even over, she knew this was something she could teach. By 2012, she'd completed her 500-hour Moksha Yoga teacher training under Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson, later adding over 200 hours of study with Ryan Leier. She's also grateful to have studied Vinyasa Karma under Srivatsa Ramaswami, the longest-standing student of Shri T. Krishnamacharya, and holds certifications in Yin, Prenatal, and Youth yoga. The learning never stops.
Emily could go on and on about how yoga has shaped her, what the practice teaches, and she’s learned after many years that each person’s experience is unique to themselves. Starting (again and again sometimes) is the hardest part. xo
